When do DNA kits go on sale?
DNA tests are popular gifts, so the big discounts tend to follow the gift calendar. If you can wait, these are the windows to watch:
- Late November: Black Friday through Cyber Monday is usually the deepest sale of the year, and it often runs into early December for holiday shipping.
- Mother's Day and Father's Day (May and June): most companies run a sale in the weeks before each one.
- DNA Day (April 25) and other spring holidays: shorter sales are common.
- Big retail events: kits sold through large online retailers are sometimes discounted during those stores' own summer and fall sales.
Before you buy:
- Compare the price with shipping; some kits add it at checkout.
- Check whether a "deal" includes a subscription or membership that renews automatically, and what it renews at.
- If you've already tested somewhere, see whether another site accepts a free or low-cost upload of your raw DNA file before buying a second kit (check current policies first).
- Sale prices usually apply to the basic ancestry test; health add-ons and premium tiers are discounted less often.
